My Grandma’s Magic

by Jason B. Crawford

I believe in the hands that cook my food. The calluses that scrape the pot clean. The soft and gentle mouthed hallelujah, with its stubborn oak base, grandmothers with their kitchen-wands and their broomstick dusting the floor all with flour and magic. I believe in the first spell, enchanted from the cookbook, the digging into the animal until it is all ready to be served. There are only so many ways to prepare a hog and yet I stay amazed at how you continue to find new ones. Everything is flavor for a witch’s brew, even the skin, even the marrow, even the tongue.
